What is managed hosting?

All websites require a little knowledge about how the "behind the scenes" aspects of the Internet works. Managed hosting is a way to leave all of this in our hands, leaving you free to get on with your business.

What does managed hosting involve?

Managed hosting is in two parts.

Firstly, all websites require an address, or domain name, to function. This is the thing you will give to other people so they can find you on the web. An example of a domain name is "bbc.co.uk"

Secondly, websites need a place to live on the net. This is called a web server. It is a computer that is on around the clock and connected to the internet all day, every day. Putting your website on a web server is, essentially, a deal in which you loan a portion of this web server's resources.

With managed hosting you let us deal with all of these concerns.

What does managed hosting cost?

Our standard managed hosting costs £60 per year, which includes a free .co.uk or .org.uk domain name. If you wish to use any other domain, e.g. .com, .net, .tv., .me, .info, .org - then an additional small cost will apply, depending on which domain it is.

What do I get for my money?

£60 buys you the right to use our web server, plus the associated domain name, for one year. It gives you 150MB of space on the web server, 3GB of monthly traffic, your own e-mail addresses at your domain (e.g. yourname@yourdomain.com) set up for you, and we will take care of uploading any changes to your website that you want to make. Additionally, it gives you access to our services for changing any settings regarding the domain or seek advice for anything you may need to change.

This package supports various technical things that certain more complicated websites may use. This includes mySQL, PHP, and lots of other features. For most users this is not necessary, but it is a service we can provide for those who need it.

What doesn't it include?

To be clear, this is not a website management service. Hosting is specifically the action of allowing your website to be found on the net. It is not a service to change the content of your website. For that, you will need one of our other website services.

If your website is particularly busy, regularly transferring over 3 GB in monthly traffic, we reserve the right to ask you to contribute more. However, for the vast majority of normal websites, this will not apply.
